Same ol' issue

Well, frustrated, and finally gave up on trying to figure out spark. Here is what I have done so far all to fix a Bug that will Start, but will not idle.

  1. Rebuilt a Carburetor (cleaned and replaced everything that looked bad or not functioning including the idle solenoid)
  2. Replaced the Air Filter (just needed it)
  3. Replaced the Spark Plugs and Spark Plug wires.
  4. Replaced the Points, Rotor, Condenser, Distributor Cap.
  5. Replaced the Coil
  6. Set the timing
  7. Adjusted all the valves
  8. Replaced the fuel pump, fuel pump push rod.
  9. Replaced the Carburetor (Cleaning & Rebuilding didn't work)
So I bought the car, and it would start and run if you kept your foot on the gas, it would not idle. I did all of the steps above and still have the exact same issue. BUT the one good thing everything is new. The only last thing I can do is replace the Distributor and put in a new one. Even through all of the elements of the distributor are new it seems there is not enough spark. 

So Step 10. I purchased a NEW Flamethrower Ignitor Electornic Ignition with a new flamethrower coil. This will remove the points, and condenser and give an electronic ignition. 

Hopefully this will fix the issue if not I am not sure what else to do. Fingers Crossed....I have these being delivered tomorrow.

A little clean up, goes a long way.

So got out there and started tearing the interior out to help clean it and really be able to see what shape the underlying metal looks like. The front had carpet, and an under lament for padding, although the carpet was in fairly decent shape,  it looked like hell, so it's gone. As you can see the floor boards have a horrible looking surface rust starting which needs to be taken care of,  another reason to remove things to see what's there.  The next would be the back of the car and all theseats and carpet. The good part is that most of the back does not have floor with floor lament,  it has the seat which covers the battery,  the back rest of the seat which covers the back deck and the ball deck which is typically very protected from sitting water. As you can see just getting the stuff out will give me a much better idea of what's there. Removing the Crankshaft pulley on a 1970 VW bug

Removing the crankshaft or timing pulley from a 1970 VW bug, sounded daunting after reading and researching how it is done. I found this one video that helped. 1st was to remove the NUT which is a 30mm socket and a breaker bar I referenced this video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P-FIjU5weLg My steps were to do exactly like this video said. Except I added some PB blaster for a day prior, then I removed the back tin, then I removed the center wire form my distributor, wedged the breaker bar against the body and tapped the key to start the engine. I know one of the comments said it is only 33ft, pounds tight and you could damage your engine, but on a 47 year old machine with some built up stickyness. I decided it would work after seeing every video say to do it this way and as long as I didn't start the car and only tapped the key it worked beyond my expectations.
